Periods with Bullet Points on your Resume? — The Answer

I've read hundreds, maybe thousands, of résumés in my career, each and every one an advertisement for someone looking for a job and hoping to come and work at the same place as me, periods on resume. I can count the number I remember on two hands. Now, to be clear, I've either recommended or hired far more than that.

In most cases, I remember those candidates as demonstrating something in the interview that made me say "yes, there's something here worth pursuing. I have no recollection of her résumé at this point, but remember being quite emphatic about the need to hire her despite the lack of relevant experience.

It turned out to be a great decision. Why don't I remember her résumé? It was un-remarkable. I honestly don't remember the résumé of a single person I've hired, periods on resume. Their résumés were equally un-remarkable.

Several pages long, periods on resume, riddled with errors, periods on resume, bogged down by inconsistencies, and nothing stood out in their work experience to say "this is an accomplishment I'm proud of.

It's possible that I'm too harsh with a résumé review or that I expect too much of applicants. Here's my philosophy though: your résumé is the very best piece of work you can produce ; it's your opportunity to show me how carefully you work, how you present your skills, and how engaged in your career you are. On one hand you should always spell-check your résumé; you'd be amazed how often people don't, and I've even seen people spell the name of their college or employer incorrectly.

On the other hand I'm not terribly hung up on the exact format and grammar of periods on resume résumé, as long as it's consistent all the way through. It was beaten into me along the way that someone else should review your résumé before you send it out. Here's the other piece of advice I would add: ask the person who stands to benefit most by you moving on to do the review.

Hopefully they'll be brutal in their honesty, look for every single error, and gloat about finding all of them. It's painful to be told what you did wrong - but it's not as painful as not getting the job because I did your résumé review and found those errors just before we started the interview. One more thing: I'm sure you're wondering what made me hire the young lady with Disney experience if Periods on resume don't remember her résumé.

It's because I remember our interview - she had a great story that ensured she stood out from all the other people that day, was passionate about the things she had done, and was well prepared with her answers.
